Donald I. Abrams, MD ist sowohl Leiter der hämatologisch-onkologischen Abteilung im General Hospital in San Francisco, als auch Professor für klinische Medizin an der University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
Er betreibt zudem eine integrative Onkologiekonsultationsspraxis am Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, UCSF. Als eine der führenden Kräfte in der HIV-, bzw. AIDS- Forschung und -Behandlung, verließ er seinen Posten an der HIV-Klinik am San Francisco General Hospital im August 2006, um der ganzheitlichen Medizin und Onkologie mehr Zeit zu widmen. Er ist Mitglied des Präsidiums des „Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center“ am UCSF und hier auch Mitvorsitzender des Programms „Symptom Management, Palliative Care and Survivorship“. 2014 war Dr. Abrams als Associate Fellow für ganzheitliche Medizin an der University of Arizona.

Dr. Abrams war Teil des Ärztekomitees, welches die bis dato bedeutendste Sammlung von Forschungen zu medizinischem Cannabis zusammengestellt hat, „The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids” herausgegeben von den National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine[1].
